What do I need to prepare for a Notarization?

  • Understand your documents

  • Proper ID and photo must be up to date 

  • Identification name matches documents

  • The signer and Notary must be able to communicate 

  • All documents must be complete without blank sections

  • Signers must agree on all documents before scheduling an appointment

  • Documents may not be signed prior to the appointment 

  • Signers must be of sound mind and competent to make decisions before the notary

  • Ensure you know the type of notarization you need for your documents, this can be answered by a lawyer

What type of ID should I bring?

Any of the following are acceptable:

  • Passport

  • Driver’s License

  • State ID

  • Two witnesses with IDs

    • Both the notary and the signer must know and trust the credible witness

    • The witness does not have a special financial interest in the process and document

Common misunderstandings:

  • A notary cannot fill in the document, except for the wording on the notarial certificate

  • A notary cannot advise you on the legal implications of a document

  • A notary is not allowed to select for you the kind of notarization you require
